The revised version of the TWE mimics a Rhet course structure:
there are readings and pre-writing planning, followed by small-group, peer discussions and, finally, the essay writing.
Details: In the 20-minute pre-writing, note-taking stage, students, individually, read a pairing of two short texts about a particular issue. This is followed by a 20-minute discussion phase where exam-takers are assembled into groups of four for a peer discussion of the texts in relation to questions posed by the prompt; this phase also holds five minutes for asking general, task-clarifying questions of the test proctor. These two phases are followed by a third one of 90-minutes for composing the thesis-driven, argument essay. Essays will be composed (typed) in word processing software on a PC, although paper will be made available for writers who prefer to compose longhand.
