The car is in fair to good condition. It has several issues and has pretty high mileage, but it runs reliably. It is a great choice for someone that needs a very affordable car primarily for commuting around town. I would keep the car myself, but I’m living in New York doing research for my degree. One problem with the car causes the check engine light to stay on (see details below) and in New York, vehicles require an inspection which requires that there is no check engine light on. Because the car can’t pass New York inspection I can’t drive it legally there, but in Illinois there is no inspection so this is not a problem.
Below is a detailed list of all the problems the car has. I want to emphasize that I’m being very open and honest about the car’s condition. There are several issues described in detail, but these are really the only problems with the car and it has been running reliably for quite a while. I wanted to give a full realistic description of the car’s condition, but I don’t want it to sound too negative. While I still consider it a very fair price, all of these issues are the reason why the car is priced as cheaply as it is.
Features:
Sliding sun roof
ABS
Cruise control
New oil changed
Semi-new tires and brakes (replaced in fall 2013)
Biggest Issues
1. Check Engine Light is ON – Code “P0442” (Evaporative emissions slow leak)
There is a pressure leak in the input line to the gas tank. No gasoline leaks out in any way, but there is a small slow leak in the vapor. This does not cause any problems with the car running reliably, but the check engine light will always be on because of this
The mechanic said the slow leak is around the “charcoal filter” before the gas enters the tank. It’s a minor problem, but to fix it would require extensive work pulling down the gas tank to access the filter then putting it back. This would cost more than the car is worth to fix.
2. Fluids tend to leak over time
Oil and radiator coolant levels have to have fluid added a bit more than usual. They should be checked regularly.
The engine can start to overheat if you don’t check the radiator fluid and add to it when needed
3. Air conditioning does not work
Despite spending money on repairs at 2 different shops, it still does not work
4. Paint is worn down (See photos)
5. Hood is hard to open
Someone bumped the front of our car when parking once. The hood is slightly out of alignment now and can be difficult to open sometimes.
Minor Issues
1. Glove compartment latch broke – does not open.
2. Back doors have a little resistance opening and closing
3. Right side mirror was knocked off in the past and is glued on with epoxy
